Joanna Malpica is a Chamoru photographer based in the Bay Area, California. Photography has bounced in and out of her life. From the AA battery powered Canon and Nikon point and shoots in her teens to making a big purchase of a Canon Rebel T6 and signing up for an Intro to Photography class at the Honolulu Museum of Art in her mid-20s, making photos and thinking of them is an ongoing journey. By reintroducing photography back into her life she felt drawn to street photos and taking photos of anything around her day-to-day life. Through this she experimented with 35mm film photography, met up with people in the local photography community in the Bay, and is now completely enamored with portraiture. She is currently seeking to explore identity based artwork through self-portraiture honoring her elders, Chamoru culture and history alongside connecting with Asian Pacific Islander creatives in the Bay through her API in the Bay Photo Project.
